What it is

Understanding gum treatment.

Gum disease begins quietly as gingivitis, with gums that look red, feel tender or bleed when you brush.

Left unchecked it can progress to periodontitis, where the infection reaches the bone and the supporting tissues that anchor your teeth. Catching it early makes treatment simpler and helps you keep your natural teeth for far longer.

Depending on what we find, treatment may involve scaling and root planing, a deep clean that removes hardened plaque from below the gumline and smooths the roots so gums can reattach. Where gums have receded and left roots exposed, gum grafting can restore lost coverage. We tailor the approach to the health of your gums, not a one-size plan.

The A M Dental difference

Healthy gums, the foundation of it all.

Bleeding or receding gums rarely fix themselves. We treat the cause — gently and thoroughly — to protect the bone and teeth your smile is built on.

Gum Treatment — who it helps
Who it's for

Is this right for you?

  • Gums that bleed when you brush, floss or eat firmer foods
  • Persistent bad breath or a lingering unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Gums that look swollen, red or feel tender to the touch
  • Teeth that appear longer as gums recede, or roots feeling sensitive
  • Anyone told they have gingivitis, periodontitis or loose teeth
The process

What to expect, step by step.

01

Gum Assessment

We examine your gums, measure the pockets around each tooth and may take X-rays to understand how deep the problem goes and what your teeth need.

02

Personalised Plan

We talk you through what we found and agree on the right treatment, whether that is a deep clean, gum grafting or a staged approach over a few visits.

03

Deep Cleaning

Under local anaesthetic where needed, we gently remove tartar and bacteria from below the gumline and smooth the roots so your gums can heal and reattach.

04

Healing Support

We show you how to care for treated gums at home and manage any tenderness, keeping you comfortable while the tissues recover over the following weeks.

05

Ongoing Reviews

We see you for follow-up checks to confirm the gums are settling and set a maintenance schedule that keeps the disease from returning.

Questions

Gum Treatment, answered.

We use local anaesthetic so the area is numb during treatment, and Dr Mandy is especially gentle with nervous patients. You may feel some tenderness afterwards, which usually settles within a few days.

Early gingivitis can often be reversed completely with treatment and good home care. More advanced periodontitis can be controlled and stabilised, but it needs ongoing maintenance to keep it in check.

Bleeding gums are usually the first sign of gum inflammation from plaque build-up. It is not something to ignore, so it is worth having your gums checked sooner rather than later.

Gum tissue does not regrow by itself once it has receded. Where recession is a concern, gum grafting can restore coverage and protect the exposed roots.

Regular brushing and flossing at home, combined with routine professional cleans and reviews, keeps plaque under control. We will set a maintenance plan suited to your gums.
