What it is

Understanding scaling & polishing.

Even with careful brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar in spots that are tricky to reach, particularly along the gumline and between teeth.

Scaling removes this build-up using fine instruments, clearing away the bacteria that irritate your gums and lead to decay. It is one of the simplest, most effective things you can do for lasting oral health.

After scaling, we polish your teeth to smooth the surfaces and lift everyday stains from coffee, tea and food. The result feels clean and fresh, and a smooth surface makes it harder for new plaque to cling on. We generally recommend a clean roughly every six months, though we will advise a rhythm that suits your mouth.

The A M Dental difference

The simplest way to keep your smile.

A thorough professional clean removes what brushing cannot, keeps gums healthy and catches small problems early — the quiet habit behind a lasting smile.

The process

What to expect, step by step.

01

Quick Check

We take a look at your teeth and gums first, noting any areas that need extra attention or that we should keep an eye on.

02

Scaling

Using gentle instruments, we clear away plaque and hardened tartar from your teeth and along the gumline, including the spots brushing tends to miss.

03

Polishing

We polish each tooth to lift surface stains and leave the enamel smooth, which also helps slow down how quickly new plaque builds up.

Questions

Scaling & Polishing, answered.

For most people, every six months keeps plaque and tartar under control. If you are prone to build-up or gum issues, we may suggest coming in a little more often.

Scaling and polishing removes surface stains, so your teeth often look brighter and cleaner afterwards. It restores your natural shade rather than making teeth whiter than they truly are.

It is usually very comfortable and simply feels like a thorough clean. If your gums are sensitive or inflamed, let us know and we will work as gently as possible.

Brushing and flossing do a great deal, but tartar hardens in places you cannot reach at home. A professional clean removes it and helps prevent gum disease.
